Weekly Schedule 11/14/2022 — This Is Not A Test

THIS WEEK IS DONATION WEEK! Sign up for class(es) to have your class fee donated to our 2022 organization.

With the intention of gathering strength for the new generation of the Black community, our donation class recipient organization for 2022 is Third Street Youth Center and Clinic. Please read more about this clinic and the variety of programs they offer San Francisco youth between 12-24 years old: https://3rdstyouth.org

We donate 100% of class fees from classes attended the second week of every month to the annual organization. We also encourage you to make your own donation directly if you are able.

Week 140 - Continuing on our gratitude theme, it's easy to throw out a few gratitude platitudes to others when you're having a great day. When everything's going your way it's so much easier to look that barista in the eye and genuinely say, "thanks for the coffee -- I love the way you make it". What about when you are hurting, whether physically (as in chronic pain) or emotionally (as in grief, chronic depression, etc.)?

I appreciated this section from authors Jennifer L. Murphy, Ph.D., and Samantha Rafie, Ph.D. (via Psychology Today) (emphasis mine):

Sometimes it can feel like the pain is both inside and outside of ourselves when we consider both physical and emotional pain. We try to find ways to relax, to disconnect. But it seems so many still feel exhausted or burned out. Perhaps the real goal should be to take pause. Instead of disconnecting, maybe we can take a moment to connect with a broader view, taking perspective and seeking peace.

Their article goes on to reference research findings regarding the benefits of a gratitude practice to help reduce pain for chronic pain sufferers. Simply said, the longer study participants practiced active gratitude the longer their pain was reduced. So add this tool to your pain management practice.

Here are a few pocket-sized quotes to remind us that our gratitude is something that we can control in a life with very few controllable outcomes:

Pain nourishes courage. You can’t be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you. – Mary Tyler Moore

Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain. Joseph Campbell

Pain has a way of clipping our wings and keeping us from being able to fly … and if left unresolved for very long, you can almost forget that you were ever created to fly in the first place. – WM. Paul Young

Lastly, a longer read by Brother David Steindl-Rast, from his writing, "A Good Day":

And so I wish for you that you would open your heart to all these blessings and let them flow through you, that everyone whom you will meet on this day will be blessed by you; just by your eyes, by your smile, by your touch -- just by your presence. Let the gratefulness overflow into blessing all around you, and then it will really be a good day.

Please be prepared to provide updated proof of vaccination when visiting the studio. Here's a useful link to have on hand when you've forgotten your paper vaccination card:

Remember that bivalent boosters are available to those who are eligible, and we encourage you to stay current on your vaccinations to help keep our community healthy.

We are continuing to wear masks fully covering the nose and mouth while in the Movement For Everyone studio. Our window does not open, our space is very intimate, and we're prioritizing hands-on work during in-person sessions. Online sessions are available for those who are unable to mask for 50-minutes. Thank you for your cooperation.
