Weekly Schedule 1/23/2023 — Happy Lunar New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year! Safe travels to those visiting family, whether biological or "chosen". I appreciated this New York Times article discussing how the holiday is evolving around the United States to reflect both an increased emphasis on traditional preparations and traditions, as well as the blending of pan-cultural Lunar New Year traditions:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/21/style/lunar-new-year-traditions.html

Although this is a time to focus on the positive and limit discussion about negative topics, it's important to realize the trauma that the events of the past three year (plus, for many communities) has taken a toll on the quality of life for AAPI communities. They have braved an increase in hate crimes and hate incidents in the past three years, in addition to historical racial bias and lack of representation. Per this July 20, 2022 Axios article by Shawna Chen:

  • Almost half of Asian Americans who reported a hate incident to Stop AAPI Hate also reported depression or anxiety, per Wednesday's report. Nearly three-quarters said discrimination is their greatest source of stress, even ahead of health concerns.

Read more about how a lack of exposure to the lived AAPI experience shapes cultural biases in education in Jennifer Lee's article for the Brookings Institute: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/how-we-rise/2022/05/18/confronting-the-invisibility-of-anti-asian-racism/

Pew Research Center has data from a survey (although with a relatively small sample size) regarding the results of hate crimes on the daily lives of AAPI people, and has a few tables that contextualize the AAPI experience with the Hispanic and Black survey respondents: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/05/09/about-a-third-of-asian-americans-say-they-have-changed-their-daily-routine-due-to-concerns-over-threats-attacks/

NAPABA (National Asian Pacific American Bar Association) has a helpful toolkit for combating AAPI hate crimes, which is accessible in 25 languages: https://www.napaba.org/page/HateCrimeResources

So for this Lunar New Year we continue to focus on what's ahead. Horoscopes can lend a sense of optimism that we are in the care of the universe when our problems seem too large. Here's a description from Farmer's Almanac for the year of the (water) Rabbit (via People magazine):

Those born in the Year of the Rabbit are said to be talented at many things. They are affectionate people, often excelling at forming close relationships. However, they also appreciate tranquility and seek out peace.

Let's all focus on our own Rabbit-like qualities while utilizing resources that help us stand up for one another.

With the intention of embracing our humanity while working toward incremental cultural change, our class donation recipient organization for 2023 is the Lawyer's Committee For Civil Rights SF. From their website:

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area is the leading civil rights organization on the West Coast that works on groundbreaking impact litigation and provides direct services to low-income communities of color.

As one of the oldest civil rights institutions on the West Coast, our goal is to dismantle systems of oppression and racism, and to build an equitable and just society. By providing direct services to our communities, taking on important litigation, and advocating for legislative change, we address issues of inequality and injustice that the moment and the movement demands.

Recent successful legislative campaigns in the San Francisco Bay Area include decriminalizing jaywalking (AB 2147) and the Public Banking Option Act (AB 1177).

We will donate 100% of class fees from the second full week of every month to this fantastic organization that helps our community on so many levels. Please join us in making your own donation when you're able.

Please be prepared to provide updated proof of vaccination when visiting the studio. Here's a useful link to have on hand when you've forgotten your paper vaccination card:

https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/

Remember that bivalent boosters are available to those who are eligible, and we encourage you to stay current on your vaccinations to help keep our community healthy.

We are continuing to wear masks fully covering the nose and mouth while in the Movement For Everyone studio. Our window does not open, our space is very intimate, and we're prioritizing hands-on work during in-person sessions. Online sessions are available for those who are unable to mask for 50-minutes. Thank you for your cooperation.

Looking forward to seeing you online and in-person this week! Until then, GET YOUR BOOSTER, breathe deeply, stay socially distant, healthy and sane.

Warmly,

Harriet
