Weekly Schedule 4/4/2022 — A Time for No

NEXT WEEK IS CLASS DONATION WEEK. Sign up now to be sure your class fee is donated.

With the intention of gathering strength for the new generation of the Black community, our donation class recipient organization for 2022 is 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic. Please read more about this clinic and the variety of programs they offer San Francisco youth between 12-24 years old: https://3rdstyouth.org

We donate 100% of class fees from classes attended the second full week of every month to the annual organization. That's next week, April 11, 2022. We also encourage you to make your own donation directly if you are able.

Week 108 — Now is the time of “no”.

I’ve had some delightful conversations over the last few weeks with people who’ve decided they’ve had enough running around for activities that no longer serve them. They’ve told me they are working to simplify.

Many of us didn’t notice that life had been getting more and more complicated until we were forced to stay home just over two years ago. Almost instantly we reduced our participation in activities, and came to a variety of conclusions. A few that come to mind:

• We thought that working more hours would equate to more pay, and realized that is not always the case.
• We filled our time with activities that weren’t meaningful to us, but we thought were necessary (acceptance, obligation, pleasing others, tradition, etc).
• We decided that many of the things we thought were important no longer hold the same significance in our lives.
• We decided to prioritize deeper and more meaningful relationships rather than a superficial network of people.
• The act of living was meaningful on it’s own, and our enjoyment of those basics was fulfilling.

Mainly, our lives became very simple for about a year. The second pandemic year we started facing increasing complexity. Decisions became much more difficult. Do you attend an unvaccinated family event or miss an important milestone? Do you visit with your adult children who aren’t taking the same health precautions you are? When do you send your kids back to in-person school, extra-curriculars, and playtime with friends? Endlessly calculating personal risk quickly became exhausting, but was still somewhat of a necessity, depending on the person and the variant.

Now that we’re in a Covid-19 “lull”, social expectations — whether internally or externally generated — are picking up. We are saying “yes” more.

Let’s make a point to pause.

We can then make a conscience choice — yes or no — that will support our needs and further our goals. When the choice is tough, remind yourself that sometimes saying "no" leads to more time for "yes".

Related to making conscious choices, I found this Huffington Post UK article about staying consistent with your fitness routine while observing and participating in the fasting component of Ramadan:
