Weekly Schedule 6/20/2022 — Juneteenth and Father’s Day

LAST WEEK WAS DONATION WEEK!

We raised $489 for this local San Francisco organization helping SF youth ages 12-24 years old. Your attendance, as well as studio growth, is bumping this number UP!

If you missed signing up for class to have your class fee donated, head directly to the 3rd Street Youth donation url to make your own contribution:

With the intention of gathering strength for the new generation of the Black community, our donation class recipient organization for 2022 is Third Street Youth Center and Clinic. Please read more about this clinic and the variety of programs they offer San Francisco youth between 12-24 years old: https://3rdstyouth.org

We donate 100% of class fees from classes attended the
second full week of every month to the annual organization. We also encourage you to make your own donation directly if you are able.

Week 119 - It's a two-fer: Happy Father's Day and Happy Juneteenth!

Firstly, I acknowledge that Father's Day is not happy for everyone. This can be a difficult holiday to mark when you are missing this relationship in your life. Feel free to skip ahead to the weekly schedule below. You can also access the class schedule here:

I am so grateful to MY FATHER (shout-out to you, Dad), for being an example of quiet perseverance, appreciating both the finer (life's too short for bad wine) and the smaller things in life, and some amazing dad-jokes.

Of course, with the simultaneous holidays today, it's only natural it piqued my curiosity about any possible link between the significance of Black Texans learning of the end of slavery and Black Fatherhood today. There's nothing concrete in my quick and light research, but there's lots to infer from how American policy after Juneteenth shaped the lives of American families. Here are some links to get started thinking about the significance for our greater community:

Given that the IFS appears to be relatively more conservative, I appreciated the explanation below from article author Kenneth Braswell:

Conservatives often address [the question of "what happens... when there are impediments to both the presence and participation of fathers in the lives of children, particularly Black fathers?"] by contending that Black fathers are not adequately present and involved with their families. They push to create policies that encourage marriage among families, particularly Black families, as a way to foster child well-being and success.

...Critics, however, point out that the success sequence disregards the impediments that individual effort cannot always overcome. As Brian Alexander wrote in
The Atlantic, it “conveniently frames structural inequalities (i.e. high unemployment, lack of education, racial discrimination, etc.) as matters of individual choice.” This is why removing barriers to structural equality is equally important to the success of families—especially Black families.

Let's continue to work toward policy changes that support Black dads and lift up our community at large.

Please be prepared to provide updated proof of vaccination when visiting the studio. Here's a useful link to have on hand when you've forgotten your paper vaccination card, or don't have an updated copy with you:
